In the Footsteps of Rumi

My introduction to Kiya Tabassian’s ensemble, Constantinople, was from watching this amazing performance on video several years ago.

From many accounts since, this very performance was magical with the “marriage” of the Montreal-based Constantinople with the well-loved Corsican choir, Barbara Furtuna.

The first time I watch this video, I was so moved. It was like the musical experience was in slow motion. As if an opening occurred in me that allowed knowledge of some ancient time and space, as if a sense of knowing came flooding back to me. I had tears streaming down my face. I felt it in my bones. I needed more of this…

Since then, I’ve followed Constantinople and their collaborations with amazing music makers around the globe. They have an incredible musical vision and collaborative approach and they play in some of the most incredible venues.

I’ve only had the opportunity to catch Constantinople leader, Kiya Tabassian, in concert in Vancouver a couple of times collaborating with other amazing solo acts from far away. Now…. in early November, I have the opportunity to see the entire group on stage with Ghalia Benali, the acclaimed Tunisian singer.

As therapy and pushing my edges, this might be good to check my nervous system, over-stimulation, maybe earplugs part-way, etc.

Constantinople and Ghalia Benali are playing at The Cultch York Theatre as part of their “In the Footsteps of Rumi” cross-Canada tour. Early-bird tix until end of Sept.. https://thecultch.com/events/in-the-footsteps-of-rumi/

Looking forward to going to this concert with friend Laura B. and her partner Mark on November 6th. I’m super excited to be testing my edges once again, with the hopes that my sensitivity to stimulation will be aligned with this musical experience. Ahh… recovery is an awesome process. So much to re-discover!

Happy to report.. the experience was beyond my wildest dreams! I was able to sit through not only the wondrous musical performance by Constantinople and the fiery and beautiful Ghalia Benali, but also the lead-in act by local Gordon Grdina’s The Marrow (brooding and exciting fusion)! I am so grateful for the blessings I am given to be able to attend musical performances such as these. Love.
